Starving and desperate for food, I was wandering through the colonial streets of Cartagena looking for dinner when I came across this man, dressed in indigenous Colombian wear and standing perfectly still on the street corner — spear in hand.

I stood there looking at him, sizing up the photography opportunity and trying to decide if the opportunity was worth skipping dinner and running all the way back to my hostel to grab my camera.

In the end, it was the incredible lighting that got me.

I wasn’t sure how long he’d be standing there but off I went on a light jog to the hostel — a 20-minute roundtrip journey, the duration of which I spent thinking about camera settings and how best to capture Mr. Indigenous!

Luckily, he was still there when I returned and I was able to capture one of my favorite photos of the year.
